3D Assignment - Leather Wallet
Leather Wallet
For my first 3D Object assignment, I was inspired to create a leather wallet. I felt that it complimented the ideas I found interesting presented in the Gary Hustwit's documentary Objectified. I mainly focused on the idea of an object gaining sentimentality, that an object can accrue memory. I initially debated between a couple of objects such as keychain or stuffed animal but I knew the object had to be something that was used pretty much daily by the average person. My thoughts being that we are more likely to become fond of an object if it is used daily.
I was also inspired by the notion of an object that you wear in instead of wear out. So I thought that having the object be made out of leather would exemplify this idea perfectly. When first purchased the wallet would be tough but with use the leather would soften and become pliable.
Another concept discussed within the documentary is adding individuality within industrial design and you can instill a feeling of distinctiveness through small imperfect craft details. I was inspired in particular by the Polder Compact sofa designed by Hella Jangerius which was briefly talked about in the documentary. To present this idea I put small buttons with somewhat crooked stitching to secure the strap and to secure the coin flap. If I had more time I would have liked to put some more slightly crooked stitching around the edges of the wallet.

For the overall design I had added several slots to put cards and a small coin pocket fastened with a button as well as a strap to hold everything together.
